ABSTRACT
Background: Sleep is a part of human biological rhytm that is important for nervous cells relaxation and body stamina recovery. By its complex and multifacet stages, sleep gives a very important role for our daily function. On the other way, chronic sleep loss is an underrecognizedpublic health problem that has a cumulative effects on physical and mental health. It can reduce quality of life and productivity, increase use of health care services, and result in injuries, illness, or deaths.The previous studies in United States and Europe showed that junior high shool and college students had higher risk of suffered from chronic sleep loss. Objectives: To know the prevalence of chronic sleep loss among college students in Special Province of Yogyakarta and its relation with genders, field of the study, and strata of the study.
Methods: This is a quantitative non-experimental research in Cross sectional way with modified Sleep Diagnostic Test Qestionnaire from Maas used as the tool. Subjects were diagnosed suffered from chronic sleep loss when there were three or more statements of this questionnaire that same as with their daily conditions. After the prevalence of chronic sleep loss was counted, the relationship between it and genders (male/female), field of the study (medical field/nonmedical field), and strata of the study (Srata 1/Diploma III) were analized by Chi Square Test.
Results: It was found that 47 of 104 (45.19%) subjects suffered from chronic sleep loss. The prevalence among male students was greater than female, but not statistically significant (25% vs 20.19%, p>0.05), so did the medical field students (29.81% vs 15.38%, p>0.05) and the Diploma III students (25.96% vs 19.23%, p>0.05) The prevalence of chronic sleep loss among college students in Special Province of Yogyakarta was 45.19%, and there were no relationship between genders, field of the study, and strata of the study with this prevalence.
